How your car payment is calculated
This free car payment calculator estimates your monthly auto loan payment. It adds sales tax to the vehicle price, subtracts your down payment and trade-in to find the amount financed, then amortizes that over your loan term at your APR.
What affects a car payment most?
The amount financed, the APR and the term. Longer terms (72–84 months) lower the monthly payment but pile on interest and keep you “underwater” longer. A bigger down payment or trade-in cuts both the payment and the interest.
Does a trade-in reduce sales tax?
In most US states, yes — you’re taxed on the price minus your trade-in value, which can save you hundreds. This calculator applies tax that way. A few states tax the full price, so check your state.
