How big should your emergency fund be?

This free emergency fund calculator sizes your safety net based on your real monthly expenses. Enter what you spend on essentials, how many months of cushion you want, and what you’ve already saved — it shows your target, the gap, and how long it’ll take to fully fund it.

How many months should I save?

The common rule is 3 to 6 months of essential expenses. Aim for 3 if you have very stable income and few dependents, and closer to 6 (or more) if your income is variable, you’re self-employed, or you’re the sole earner.

What counts as an “essential” expense?

Only the things you’d still have to pay if your income stopped: rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, insurance, minimum debt payments and transport. Leave out dining out, subscriptions and discretionary spending — your emergency budget would be leaner.

Struggling to find the money?

Most people can free up more than they think once they see their spending clearly. The Monthly Budget Tracker helps you find the cash, and the Net Worth Tracker keeps you motivated as your savings grow.
