Margin vs markup — and why it matters
This free profit margin calculator answers the question every seller has: “what should I charge?” Enter your cost and the profit margin you want, and it works out the price, your profit per unit, and your markup.
The most common pricing mistake is confusing margin and markup. Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price. Markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. A 50% markup is only a 33% margin — mixing them up quietly kills your profit.
How do I price for a target margin?
To hit a target margin, you divide your cost by (1 − margin). For a $20 item at a 40% margin, that’s $20 / 0.60 = $33.33. This calculator does that instantly, plus shows the markup so you can sanity-check your pricing.
What margin should I aim for?
It depends on your industry, but many product businesses target 40–60% gross margin to cover overhead, marketing and still profit. Service businesses often aim higher. Try a few numbers above to find a price that works.
